The Department of Accounting was established in 1967. It started with a batch of 10 students in the then 3-year degree programme. With the take-off of the Semester system in 1996, the B.Sc. Accounting programme runs over a 4-year period. In addition to the B.Sc. programme, the Department presently runs Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil), Professional Masters (MAC), and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDAF) in Accounting and Finance. In order to meet the intermediate staffing needs of organisations, sub-degree programmes in Accounting, Banking, and Islamic Banking and Finance are also run. The Department is located at the Kongo Campus of the University and is one of the four academic Units within the Faculty of Administration. The other three academic Units are the Departments of Business Administration, Local Government and Development Studies, and Public Administration. The Departments of Accounting and Business Administration together with the Department of Economics in Samaru Campus are in the process of transformation into “ABU Business School”. The ABU Business School, located in Samaru Campus, is a world-class learning complex in terms of learning facilities, executive accommodation, staff offices, libraries, cafeteria and eatery points, and other related facilities. The Department has transformed from a modest beginning to a large academic Unit in the University. It is considered by some as the most vibrant Department in the University. The staffing of the Department continues to grow from strength to strength, which comprises of 36 resident academic staff and 20 non-teaching staff. Five of the resident staff are at the professorial cadre with additional six waiting for their promotion letters to the professorial cadre. Currently, the total students’ population in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels is about 2000, drawn from every nooks and crannies of Nigeria and some neighboring West African States. The Department’s admission policy is merit-based and in accordance with the Federal Government admission criteria, with equal opportunity given to all. It is noteworthy that since inception, the Department has succeeded in training thousands of graduates. Many of its alumni are now occupying responsible positions as accounting practitioners and educators in several establishments both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, the B.Sc. Accounting programme of the Department has since received and still retains the full accreditation of National Universities Commission (NUC) and other professional accounting bodies in Nigeria and beyond like ICAN, ACCA, CFA, ANAN, CITN, and CIBN. It is also worthy of mentioning that the Department is very much committed to staff development. Whereas twenty of the academic staff members possessed Ph.Ds., fourteen are at different stages of their Doctoral Degree programme both within and outside the country.

Objectives of the Department


 • To provide the best education in Accounting so as to equip young men and women for careers as Accounting Educators and Practitioners nationally and internationally.
•  To sufficiently prepare students for career in teaching, research and consultancy in Accounting and related disciplines.
•  To equip students of Accounting with the skills needed for recognizing and defining problems and taking appropriate decision using current scientific techniques and ICT.
•   To consolidate and expand the frontiers of knowledge in Accounting through development of teaching materials, research and publications.
•   To inculcate in students the awareness of, and sensitivity to, environmental factors and conditions and their impact on Accounting thought and practice.
•   To develop students in leadership and interpersonal relation skills that is needed for working in organizations.
